An advocate is a type of professional person in several different legal systems. The broad equivalent in many English law-based jurisdictions can be a barrister. However, in Scotland, Italy, France, Spain, South Africa, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Scandinavian jurisdictions, Brazil and the British Crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, advocate is also considered as a honorific, such as in “Adv. Benedetto Marcello”.
